Gastric infection with H. pylori: the probiotic yogurt emergency treatment failures

For the percentage of patients (between 10 and 23%) who do not respond to drug treatment aimed at eradicating the germ H. pylori, responsible for most peptic ulcers, pretreatment based on the consumption of yogurt containing Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium would improve subsequent therapeutic efficacy, according to a Taiwanese study published in the journal "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition ".
Such pretreatment may in fact lead to a reduction of the bacterial load of Helicobacter pylori which proves resistant to two antibiotics, "said Dr. Bor-Shyang Sheu the Cheng Kung University in Tainan." Indeed it might be useful to improve the clinical efficacy of administered as second-line treatment, "he added.

Dr. Sheu and colleagues divided 138 non-responding patients a week of triple antibiotic against H. pylori in two groups: one receiving a pretreatment of 4 weeks consisting of absorption of 400 ml of probiotic yogurt a day, the other receiving nothing else before a quadruple antibiotic therapy prescribed in a second time these two groups.

Test indicating the presence of the organism showed values significantly decreased in the group who consumed probiotic yoghurt compared to the group that received directly quadruple antibiotic therapy, the authors report.

The group that received pre-treatment of antibiotics and probiotics quadruple also got the highest rate of eradication of H. pylori (85% versus 71% in the second group).

"These data suggest that the intake of probiotic substances 4 weeks before antibiotics quadruple reduces so notorious residual antibiotic resistance of the organism after failure of a first drug treatment," the authors conclude.
