Where are red blood cells produced?

The kidneys secrete a hormone called erythropoietin, which controls the bone marrow production of new red blood cells. These cells circulate in the blood for 120 days. Then they are destroyed in the spleen. Every day, approximately 1% of red blood cells are renewed.
