World No Tobacco Day
The World No Tobacco Day will be
held this Tuesday, May 31
The "Framework Convention of
the World Health Organization Tobacco Control" is the theme of this year.
Established to fight against the
globalization of the tobacco epidemic, "the Framework Convention is the
best tool for tobacco control" said Mr. Ban Ki-Moon, Secretary General of
the UN.
The Framework Convention's objective
is to reduce the demand for tobacco:
- Increasing prices and taxes on
tobacco,
- Limiting the advertising and
sponsorship,
- By warnings on packages,
- Prohibiting the sale of tobacco to
minors.
"The Framework Convention is
effective in terms of protecting the health of people of all countries that
have adopted and are enforcing, but the road ahead is still long," said
Mr. Ban Ki-Moon .
The Framework Convention on Tobacco
Control has 172 Parties (countries and European Union).
The aim of this day is to emphasize the
obligations of the signatory countries and to promote the implementation of the
Convention
