Gout: what are the causes?

A gout attack can happen at any time, especially in a susceptible individual. An excess of alcohol, a diet rich in protein ... We are not always aware of the involvement of some of our lifestyle in our health.

Gout is a condition characterized by severe pain, swelling and redness occurring at certain joints such as the wrist, ankle or knee, but more often in the big toe. It is due to an abnormal increase in uric acid in the blood. There is talk of hyperuricemia.

Uric acid is a toxic substance from the body's metabolism (breakdown of dead cells and food) normally excreted by the kidneys, when uric acid is not removed, it builds up in the blood. And with time, it turns into crystals settle in the joints, skin, kidneys or cartilage. This crystal deposition causes a defensive reaction of the organism to cause an inflammatory process where pain and redness.

Men are most affected by gout. However, uric acid in the body have been identified several risk factors that cause an accumulation of acid and can trigger a gout attack. They are:

- Certain medications such as diuretics for example, reduces the activity of the kidneys and elimination also leads to a lack of elimination of uric acid

- Genetic factors in familial forms

- Some diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, obesity or kidney problems that disrupt the elimination of uric acid

- A high protein diet (including offal, shellfish), a sudden change of diet

- Excessive consumption or regular alcohol (especially beer), tea, cocoa, coffee increases the elimination of water, which facilitates the accumulation of uric acid

- Stress

Gout can be explained either by an excessive increase in uric acid in the blood due to an increase in the body's metabolism (diet rich in protein and alcohol) or a lack of elimination kidneys.

The presence of any of these factors can trigger a gout attack first, especially in a susceptible individual.
