AIDS and hepatitis B
,
Patients with AIDS with concomitant hepatitis B, are more likely to develop chronic hepatitis, which can cause liver failure.
Both diseases affect each other and now it seems more effective to prioritize hepatitis.
See HEPATITIS B TREATMENT.
In case of co-infection, the viral load of hepatitis B is higher and the progression to cirrhosis is more common (25% in HIV-positive, against 6.5% in HIV-negative).
This is understandable in these immunocompromised patients.
Similarly, the spread of AIDS and the clinical deterioration of HIV positive subjects co-infected with hepatitis B is faster.
Furthermore, co-infection with hepatitis B reduces the effectiveness of HIV treatment.
