AIDS and Hepatitis C
,
Patients with AIDS with concomitant hepatitis C have a higher risk of developing chronic hepatitis, which can cause liver failure.
Both diseases affect each other and now it seems more effective to prioritize hepatitis.
See HEPATITIS C TREATMENT.
In case of co-infection, the viral load of hepatitis C is higher and the progression to cirrhosis is more common (25% in HIV-positive, against 6.5% in HIV-negative)
This is understandable in these immunocompromised patients.
Similarly, the spread of AIDS and the clinical deterioration of HIV positive subjects co-infected with hepatitis C is faster.
Furthermore, co-infection with hepatitis C reduces the effectiveness of HIV treatment.
