Complex carbohydrates: inadequate consumption among women
,
Bread and sandwiches poor fat foods are preferred in women whose intake of complex carbohydrates is inadequate, says an endocrinologist in the newsletter of the Observatory bread.
The eating habits of women are representative of the food imbalance in recent years in France, "said the Observatory bread introduction of its newsletter. Indeed, despite the refusal of the French to consume saturated fats, often of animal origin, and certain meat products, they actually consume an excessive amount of fat at the expense of too low amount of carbohydrates, including complex carbohydrates (bread, starchy cereal products).
Their average daily intake of fat (37%) and especially of saturated fatty acids was superior to the official nutritional recommendations (50-55% carbohydrates, 30-35% fat and 15% protein). In addition to their daily consumption of carbohydrates (40%) is insufficient.
"To achieve a balanced diet, a woman with a moderate physical activity should ingest 260-290 g of carbohydrates per day, including a contribution from 175 to 195 g of complex carbohydrates, essential energy source of the brain and muscles," says Dr. Annie LACUISSE-Chabot, an endocrinologist and senior author of the newsletter.
The bread contains an average of 50% starch (complex carbohydrate most common in foods) is more than other starchy foods like pasta (20%) and potatoes (23%), appears as one of foods to eat to achieve the objective of the National Nutrition and Health Plan (NFHP) on the increase in the consumption of complex carbohydrates.
However, the average consumption of bread women would amount to 127g per day or a half-baguette-and therefore lower than 240 g of dietary intake (RDI), according to data from a TNS Sofres survey.
Given this situation, the Observatory recalls that the bread rich in complex carbohydrates sandwich "is not to ban" and it can be less caloric than quiche, pizza or a croque monsieur. However, the contents of the sandwich should be limited fat and fat-rich ingredients (rillettes, fries), and accompanied by a fruit to be an interesting meal from a nutritional point of view.
The Observatory bread has launched a website (www.observatoiredupain.fr) to make available scientific reference information about the bread but also practical tools reserved for health professionals.
