Drugs: effects on the stomach

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are the most frequently used aspirin and ibuprofen for the treatment of pain and fever.

However, these drugs cause a change in the cells of the lining of the stomach causing the modification of several protection mechanisms of the gastric mucosa.

Whatever the form of absorption of NSAIDs and aspirin (oral involving direct contact with the gastric mucosa, injection, suppository, ointment or gel dermal application ...), the toxicity of these drugs is the same .

However, these effects on the gastric mucosa depends on the amount of drug in the blood and the duration of the medications. Skin applications are less harmful because of the lesser amount in the bloodstream.

Ibuprofen is a drug widely used. Tolerance and sensitivity to this drug varies from one subject to another. Its use will be for a short period with a strict dosage.

Thus, ibuprofen and aspirin are drugs that make the vulnerable stomach wall and are in themselves factors aggravating the stomach pain. Stopping these drugs during painful episodes greatly contributes to the improvement of signs.

Some medications require taken long term can be a source of pain in the stomach such as those used in the treatment of hypertension, heart disease or asthma.
