A diet rich in whole grain consumption reduces the risk of metabolic syndrome, according to a study published in the journal "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition."
Metabolic syndrome includes several abnormalities, including abdominal obesity (increased waist circumference), high blood pressure, low HDL cholesterol (the "good" cholesterol) and high triglycerides, as well as insulin resistance (reflected by an increase in blood sugar). It represents a risk factor for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Studies have focused on populations of middle-aged adults have already made a profit of consumption of whole grains reduce the risk of this syndrome, said one of the authors of this study.

In it, U.S. researchers collected data on dietary habits for more than 20 years among adults aged volunteers, including distinguished contributions in full to those refined grains.

The results show that the higher the consumption of whole grains, the higher the sugar levels in the blood decrease. In contrast, high levels of fasting glucose may indicate impaired glucose tolerance or the presence of diabetes. People consuming refined grains in large quantities and multiply by two the risk of metabolic syndrome.

"We must therefore encourage all people, including older, consume whole grains at least three times a day, which could well replace refined grains to prevent the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease," the advocate researchers.
