Metabolic syndrome : a moderate prevalence in France, but an increased risk of mortality The prevalence of metabolic syndrome in France rose moderately but exposed to an increased risk of mortality among both men and women risk, according to a study conducted by experts from center CPI ( Preventive and Clinical Investigations - Paris ) and presented to Paris at a meeting at the National Academy of Medicine . The aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence, associated risk markers and the impact on mortality of the metabolic syndrome (MS ) and its components " , report Drs Frederique Thomas , Bruno Pannier, Kathy Bean, Nicolas Danchin and Athanase Benetos IPC center in Paris . For the study population aged 40 and older subjects, volunteers for a free health check at IPC Centre from 1999 to 2002, a total of 40,977 men with an average age of 53.2 years and 21,277 women with a mean age of 55 , 9 years. During a follow-up period of 3.6 years on average, 271 men and 87 women died . The presence of metabolic syndrome associated with hypertension , abdominal obesity, insulin resistance (increased fasting glucose, a prelude to diabetes) and lipid disorders ( increased triglycerides and decreased HDL cholesterol , or "good " cholesterol) was observed in 11.8 % of men and 7.6% women. From 1999 to 2002 , the prevalence (total number of cases per year) increased by 11 % to 12.8 % among men and 7.2 % to 8.8 % among women . "The parameters significantly associated with metabolic syndrome after adjustment for age , are a reduction in physical activity and vital capacity , increased pulse pressure , heart rate , gamma -GT , transaminases , alkaline phosphatase , uric acid , leukocytes , globulins , signs of oral inflammation , as well as scores of anxiety and depression, " the authors cite . The excess risk of mortality from this disease , compared to subjects who did not , on average is multiplied by 1.82 for men and 1.80 in women. After adjustment for age , sex, smoking habits , total cholesterol , physical activity , socioeconomic status and cardiovascular disease , the mortality risk is multiplied by 1.69 . " To assess the impact on mortality of each component of the metabolic syndrome and their combinations by three , a control group of people without any components of the condition has been used," indicate stakeholders. " Thus, they reveal , after adjustment for age and sex, the risk of mortality is multiplied by 2.36 for waist circumference increased by 2.08 for triglycerides , 1.71 for HDL- cholesterol decreased by 1.75 for high blood pressure and 2.93 for the high glucose. Among the various combinations of three factors , the association increased abdominal circumference + triglycerides + high blood sugar has the most significant impact " . " In this large French population , where the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is moderate, the subjects with this syndrome have an increased incidence of hemodynamic disorders , respiratory, hepatic , inflammatory and psychological, and the risk of mortality increased by 70 %. The abdominal obesity associated with elevated triglycerides and blood glucose appears to be the most deleterious triad "concluded cardiologists .
