The scanner is mainly conducted to better study the bony structures as the mastoid and the ossicles but also the eardrum and ear cavities. It may be indicated in cases of chronic ear infections and can detect ear malformations.

MRI studies mainly soft tissues and fluid-filled structures, including different structures in the ear and the auditory nerve cavities.
MRI may show an infection of the inner ear (labyrinthitis), tumor (neuroma, cholesteatoma) or malformation.
