Addiction: definition according to DSM-IV

According to the DSM-IV, an
addiction is an inadequate method of substance use leading to functional
impairment or clinically significant distress.
Addiction is characterized by the
presence of at least three events are as follows, over a continuous period of
twelve months.

Tolerance as defined by either of
the following symptoms:
Need for markedly increased amount to get the desired effect.
Markedly diminished effect with continued use of the same amount of the
substance.
Withdrawal characterized by either
of the following events:
Appearance of characteristic withdrawal syndrome for the substance
The same substance or a loved one is taken to relieve or avoid withdrawal syndromes.
The substance is often taken in
larger amounts or over a longer period than intended.
There is a persistent desire or
unsuccessful efforts to cut down or control substance use.
Much time and activities went for
the substance.
Social, occupational or recreational
activities are given due to the use of the substance.
The substance use is continued,
although the person is conscious of his physical or psychological problem
caused by this substance.
