This kind of excited delirium is a serious form of mental confusion, the
cause is usually infectious or toxic to the brain.
CAUSES
- The drug intoxication is most often involved in both the child in the
elderly.
- The abrupt withdrawal of alcohol or drugs may be involved.
- Of course a high fever, meningitis or encephalitis syndrome may also
be involved.
- A stroke, brain tumor, brain abscess, brain injury, transient global
amnesia syndrome REYE.
- Metabolic causes may also be involved:
hypoglycemic state, uremia, hepatic encephalopathy, hypoxia,
hypercapnia, heart failure due to lack of cerebral circulation, dehydration.
SYMPTOMS
These are variables disorders of perception and intellect.
These disorders are usually reversible.

- Loss of memory in particular as regards the recent events, and total
forgetfulness of what happened once the crisis has passed.
- Impaired understanding of ideation, thinking is slow and inconsistent
- The judgment is totally altered
- The patient may have periods of great agitation or otherwise periods
of total dejection.
- Finally, auditory or visual hallucinations are common.
TREATMENT
In general the cause identified and treated allows healing time shorter
or longer especially in the elderly.
The important thing is to take the necessary precautions to ensure that
the patient's condition is not likely to be dangerous to himself and others.
