Psychological mechanism of addiction
Biological and social mechanisms alone
are not sufficient to create the phenomenon of addiction.

For example nicotine alone can not
lead to a state of dependency in a smoker or the effect of alcohol alone does
not give the state of dependence. Mental characteristics of the subject come
into play and are heavily involved in the addiction process.
In the psychological mechanism, the
subject tries to replace his lack of affection by an object or activity in
order to find pleasure and avoid pain. It is then the result of a loss of
control of emotions or difficult to manage positive and negative emotions.
People at risk of addiction are
often anxious people, depressed, with a lack of confidence, which is easily
engaged with an object or act.
